Bishop Frank welcomed the people and introduced the service, and then Revd Canon Jane Maycock was presented by the Revd Canon Michael Hampel, before Jane made a declaration and oaths according to law.
The Dean of Durham, the Very Revd Dr Philip Plyming, led Jane to her stall and formally installed her, before both saying the Lord's Prayer. Jane read the first lesson of the service, Zechariah 4: 1-10.
A small ceremony was attended by Jane Maycock, Bishop Frank and the College of Canons, where Canon Maycock made a declaration and was presented with a key to the cathedral. Congratulations to Jane for becoming Residentiary Canon and Member of Chapter of Durham Cathedral.
Jane's role at the cathedral will take forward the Cathedral’s Proclamation strand within Vision 2033. Jane will develop the Cathedral’s ministry of evangelism, discipleship and social justice and work with Prof Simon Oliver as Co-Director of the Durham Cathedral Institute, hosting leading speakers on key issues facing the world today.
Jane was previously Acting Director of Ministry Development and Interim Diocesan Director of Ordinands in the Diocese of Carlisle. In almost 34 years of ordained ministry, she has served in local church ministry and ministered as a theological lecturer, chaplain and DDO.
A published author, Jane has recently completed her doctoral thesis at the University of Durham in the area of literature, theology and contemporary culture.
The special service also celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Lesotho-Durham link, a partnership between the Lesotho Diocese and the Diocese of Durham.
In the project's early stages, it supported large-scale environmental efforts, including the planting of 250,000 trees. It also funded the construction of a replacement rural clinic and in 1995, the Link opened a church, a school and a vocational training programme, equipping young people with practical skills.
The newly appointed Bishop of Durham, the Venerable Rick Simpson, also has strong connections with the partnership, having visited in 2015 and served as a trustee. The service gave thanks for the life of the Link and prayed for its future. More information about the partnership can be found here.
