With great sadness, we share the news of the death of Trevor Chesterton, long-standing and much-loved key member of the Verging team at Durham Cathedral
Trevor died on Saturday 11 January 2025 after complications following a major operation. He will be much missed by the many people who came to know him and value his special character and his life of service.
Philip Plyming, Dean of Durham shared the following words,
"Trevor's faith shone through everything he did and we trust him into the loving arms of Christ whom he knew and served his whole life. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Catherine and all his family and friends at this time."
Trevor was a formidable colleague, who served on the Verging team for just over 20 years and made a huge impact on those around him.
Rebekah Best, Head verger said,
"He was dedicated, faithful, caring and had a very dry sense of humour. He had a distinctly low voice that resonated around the church and within our hearts. Trevor had knowledge of the liturgy that only he would know; he was truly one of a kind - and kind was what he was to the core, a true heart of gold. We feel lucky and blessed to have worked alongside him."
For those who would like to pay their respects, Trevor's funeral service will take place on Monday 3 February at 2pm in the Cathedral. The funeral will be livestreamed here.
All are invited as we give thanks for Trevor’s life and commit him to God.
To allow colleagues to pay their respects at the funeral of longstanding Verger Trevor Chesterton, the visitor desk, shop, museum and restaurant will be closed from 1.45pm on Monday 3 February.
