On 5 November, the Durham Cathedral Institute debate Prospects for US Politics: An Election-Day Conversation, discussed what is at stake for the UK and the world on the day of the US Presidential Election.

Dr Fiona Hill (Chancellor Durham University) Durham Cathedral Institute Public Meeting

The US presidential election on Tuesday 5 November was one of the most consequential in modern times. On the agenda were political issues, such as immigration, war and peace, abortion, and the cost of living, with major ethical significance. For Christians, they invite reflection on the nature and dignity of human life, created in the image and likeness of God, as well as what it means to serve the common good in society.

On election day at Durham Cathedral Institute, Dr Philip Plyming, Dean of Durham, was joined for a special conversation by Dr Fiona Hill, Chancellor of Durham University and a former US presidential advisor.

Dr Hill, the daughter of a miner from Bishop Auckland in County Durham, spoke about her background and career, as well as what may be needed to build an ‘infrastructure of opportunity’ to change the lives of future generations.

The event, held in the Nave of Durham Cathedral was attended by over 600 people, including 150 students from sixth forms across the North East. Thanks to students at PalTV, a recording of the event is now available to watch.
