Durham Cathedral is lit with hundreds of candles for a service in which we celebrate the presentation of Jesus in the Jerusalem Temple, the feast day which traditionally brings the Christmas season to an end.
The presentation of Jesus, God in our human flesh, was a fulfilment of God’s ancient promise to fill the temple with his presence and glory.
This feast is often called Candlemas because of the traditional blessing of candles which takes place at this service; for Christians, these blessed candles are a symbol of Jesus Christ, who is often referred to as the 'light of the world'.
