The North-East’s two most famous saints, Cuthbert and Bede, lived in a time of great political and social volatility, and yet contributed to a renewal of culture through their leadership, writings and example. They created centres of learning and cultural innovation that set the foundations for centuries to come. They sought to combat tribalism through creating and living a shared story. They established the North-East as a centre of artistic and scholarly excellence. They exhibited faith and hope in uncertain times.
In a world of global insecurity, cultural tribalism and political volatility, leading historian Tom Holland invited the audience to consider what Cuthbert and Bede might have to say today. In the Cathedral where Cuthbert and Bede still rest, Tom was interviewed by the Dean of Durham, Philip Plyming, about how Cuthbert and Bede both challenge and encourage us to think more deeply about our cultural roots, our shared story and our basis for hope.
