Watching a livestream service: commonly asked questions

We're changing the way we livestream services here at Durham Cathedral by moving services to YouTube.

From Thursday 6 June, all the services currently streamed on Facebook will move to YouTube.

We're changing platforms due to increased feedback we've received about quality and sound issues due to streaming through Facebook. The services themselves will not be changing.

Please find answers to common questions, about how to watch and engage with our livestreamed services on YouTube.

Commonly asked questions:

Why have you moved the live-streaming of services from Facebook to YouTube?
We want to bring the best possible experience to online worship and due to issues with sound quality and Facebook’s music copyright restrictions which were muting the choir during and after some services - this was not being fulfilled.

Therefore, we have moved the livestreaming of our services to YouTube which is fundamentally a video platform and will significantly reduce the issues we’re experiencing with Facebook.

Will you still livestream the same services?

Yes, the live-streaming schedule will remain the same, the only difference is that you will be able to watch on YouTube rather than Facebook.

Can I watch services with subtitles?

Yes, there are two ways to turn subtitles on the video you're watching. To turn subtitles on for just one video, click the 'settings' icon and press 'captions' and click 'English-auto-generated'. To turn captions on for every video you watch, go to Playback settings here, and click 'always show captions'.

How do I now watch the live-streamed services?
You can view our livestreamed services on our Durham Cathedral YouTube channel here.

Do I need a YouTube account to watch?

I like to comment on the current Facebook livestreamed services, can I leave a comment on a YouTube livestream?
Yes, you can leave a comment and we hope you do. You will need a YouTube account in order to leave a comment.

Will I see adverts on YouTube?

You may experience a skippable advert at the beginning or mid-way through the live stream.
This is part of YouTube's terms of service and adverts will be targeted to your wider online use.

We are working to become a YouTube Partner which would mean we would be able to turn off any adverts. However, currently, you may experience some adverts.

Will I be able to watch the livestream at a later date?

Yes, all live-streamed events and services will be available on our YouTube channel to watch. Morning prayer will remain online and services featuring the choir will be on the YouTube channel for 72 hours after the service.
