Lent Talks 2026: Encountering God through the creative arts

We hosted six figures from the world of creative arts for a series of talks during Lent 2026.

After Evensong each Sunday during Lent, the Reverend Canon Michael Hampel Vice-Dean and Precentor of Durham Cathedral was in conversation with figures from the world of creative arts.

Each week focused on a different topic relevant to the speaker's career. All of the talks are available to watch on youtube.

Jolyon Mitchell on Film

On Sunday 22 February 2026 we welcomed the Reverend Professor Jolyon Mitchell who is Principal of St John’s College, Durham University, former producer and journalist with BBC World Service, who teaches media, religion and culture. Jolyon discussed the topic of film.

On Sunday 1 March 2026, we welcomed Catherine Fox, author, academic and director of the Manchester Writing School at Manchester Metropolitan University. Catherine spoke on the topic of literature.

On Sunday 8 March 2026, Sir Gregory Doran, the former Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, explored the topic of theatre.

Peter Taylor on Television

On Sunday 15 March 2026, Peter Taylor, LVO, Head of Operations at BBC Studios spoke on the theme of television. In his role, Peter oversaw the BBC's broadcasts of major national events such as Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral service and King Charles III’s Coronation.

On Sunday 22 March 2026 we welcomed Mel Howse, the award-winning artist and architectural enameller, who created the Illumination Window, located in the North Quire Aisle of the Cathedral. Mel spoke on the topic of art.
