What is Luxmuralis?
Luxmuralis is an artistic collaboration that produces a light and sound art installation. Each immersive experience has filled Durham Cathedral's centuries-old architecture with dazzling projections.
Luxmuralis has been touring cathedrals in England for several years, and Durham Cathedral was the first to host their artwork in the North East in 2022.
About the Artists
Luxmuralis is a collaborative team combining artists from different backgrounds and artistic disciplines. The team’s aim is to take visual art to public places.
The artwork and visual imagery is created by Peter Walker, Lead Artist and Artistic Director, who has interpreted collections from the Natural History Museum Oxford and the William Morris Museum to bring the wonder of the natural world inside. His art work consists of large-scale sculpture, commissioned and bespoke sculptural works as well as paintings, drawings, film, sound and light installations
David Harper, Lead Artist and Composer, created the musical soundscape for the shows. The music he writes and produces has been used for BBC and Channel 4 TV productions, as well as sound art installations which are frequently exhibited throughout the UK.
The Storytellers, 2025
The Storytellers is another spectacular light installation by Luxmuralis that will bring stories out of the pages of their books and into reality. Walk through ancient texts and become immersed in the realms of famous author’s imaginations which will come to life onto the cathedral walls.
Space, 2024
Visitors began their journey by entering the cathedral in darkness through the North Door, before walking down the North Aisle, through the Chapel of the Nine altars, and then through the Quire from the South aisle. Projections were displayed on the iconic Rose Window, following on to the crossing to the top of the Nave. The Cloisters and Chapter House were also illuminated.
New to 2024, the south side of the cathedral could be seen lit up when gazing through the Cloister Arches. Many visitors took a moment at the end of their intergalactic experience, to light a candle in the Galilee Chapel.
