Baptisms, weddings and funerals

Durham Cathedral hosts baptism, wedding and funeral services for members of our cathedral community, to mark these important events in life.

Baptisms

Members of the cathedral community and their families may be baptised in the cathedral. Please contact worship@durhamcathedral.co.uk to find out more.

Weddings

In the Church of England, parish churches have the privilege of baptising, marrying and burying those who live in the areas for which they have spiritual responsibility. Read the Church of England's guide to getting married, and find your local parish with A Church Near You.

We are delighted to marry couples at the cathedral who are members of our cathedral community, or in certain circumstances children or grandchildren of members of our community. Often, people on the cathedral's Community Roll are eligible to be married in the cathedral.

All couples wishing to marry at Durham Cathedral must first obtain an Archbishop’s Special Licence, as the Church of England has clear rules for when marriages can take place in cathedrals.

If you believe you may be eligible to get married at the cathedral, please contact worship@durhamcathedral.co.uk to discuss this further.

Funerals

We hold funeral services for people with relevant connections to the cathedral. Please contact worship@durhamcathedral.co.uk to find out more.
