Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols

Wednesday 22 December at 6:00 PM

This special service is a real highlight of the Christmas season, with the joyful liturgy, readings, and music sung by Durham Cathedral Choir.

All are welcome to our traditional Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, which always begins in darkness. From the darkness the voice of a solo chorister rises, singing the first verse of Once in Royal David's City. This service is a highlight of the Advent and Christmas season, during which lessons are read and the cathedral choir sings beautiful music to herald the birth of Christ.

This service will be live-streamed on Durham Cathedral’s Facebook page. You’ll be able to rewatch the service for three days after it’s first broadcast.

Please book a ticket in advance

If you’d like to attend this service in person, you must book a free ticket in advance.

Please ensure that all members of your party, including children, have a valid ticket to access this event. This is because we need to know how many people are inside the cathedral, and limit numbers in line with our COVID-19 risk assessments.

Keeping everybody safe

Please do not attend the event if you have any symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19).

Upon entry to the cathedral, all visitors over the age of 18 must be prepared to show their NHS COVID Pass as proof of vaccination, a negative PCR or lateral flow test taken up to 48 hours before the event, or a positive PCR test from within the last 6 months.

We encourage visitors to wear a face covering in enclosed and crowded spaces where people come into contact with people they don’t normally meet.
