Over 50 people joined the Dean of Durham, Dr Philip Plyming, in the Cathedral Undercroft, for the launch of his new book, Giving Thanks: Rediscovering the Heart of Gratitude.
Published by Canterbury Press, the book explores the General Thanksgiving, a much-loved prayer from the 1662 Book of Common Prayer and one learned off by heart by previous generations of churchgoers.
As part of the launch Philip was interviewed by Walter Moberly, Emeritus Professor at Durham University, and spoke about how the General Thanksgiving came to be written 350 years ago and why its message is relevant today.
Speaking after the launch, Philip Plyming commented,
Walter Moberly added,
‘I had not known that the General Thanksgiving had such an interesting backstory in the politics of its day. The hard times of its origins resonate strongly with problems today, and make the prayer more prayable. I found this new book engaging, down to earth, and accessible.’
Signed copies of Giving Thanks are available at the Cathedral bookshop, and further copies may be ordered online.
