Durham Cathedral has made two senior appointments, to support the delivery of the Cathedral’s Mission as it looks ahead to its 900th anniversary in 2033.

Paul Smith has been appointed to the position of Director of Development, and Cath Poucher has been appointed as Head of Marketing and Communications. Both roles have an important part to play in the realisation of the Cathedral’s vision for its 900th anniversary, Vision 2033.

Paul Smith joined Durham Cathedral as Director of Development in May 2026. As Director of Development, Paul oversees the planning and delivery of all fundraising activity from regular, legacy and major gifts by individuals to grants, partnerships, and corporate donations, ensuring that everyone can contribute to the life and vision of the cathedral.

Paul has long experience in fundraising as a director at Liverpool Biennial, Dance Consortia North-West and Arts & Business as well extensive experience in politics and business.

Cath Poucher is due to join the Cathedral in August 2026. Before joining the Cathedral, Cath worked at a destination management organisation, where she led major campaigns to promote the region and broaden its appeal to new audiences. Cath also held senior roles at a major historic civic venue, where she oversaw communications, sales and events within a historic setting.

Cath’s career began in museums and heritage organisations, including a leading visitor attraction in Oxford. She holds a Master’s degree in the Archaeology of Buildings from the University of York and a Diploma in Professional Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing.

Guy Sampson, Chief Operating Officer of Durham Cathedral commented:

“We are delighted to welcome both Paul and Cath to the Durham Cathedral team; Paul and Cath both bring impressive skills and experience from their careers so far, and we are delighted about them joining us. Both fundraising and communications are vital enablers of Vision 2033, and we are excited Paul and Cath join us at this important juncture in the fulfilment of our Mission under God.”
