Enabling Priority: Caring for our Fabric and Collections

One of our enabling priorities for Vision 2033

We are proud to be part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our buildings and our collections are recognised to be world-class and we take seriously our responsibility to care for them and maintain them for future generations to enjoy, including working towards a net zero target within the Vision period. At the same time we know that our buildings and collections will also make an important contribution to the overall aims of Vision 2033, as we seek to increase our reach and impact in the local region and beyond.

Our goals for 2025-2027 include:

  • developing the Chapel of the Holy Cross and associated space into a welcoming centre for pilgrimage and prayer
  • scoping and implementing a repair programme for the cathedral cloisters, undertaking a spatial review of the cathedral and its precincts to identify a holistic approach to space, helping us get the best use and return from what we have
  • bringing forward a plan to improve the cathedral riverbanks spaces, to support their use to serve pilgrimage and visitor enjoyment 
  • review and update our strategy to move forward on our journey towards Carbon Net Zero
  • making improvements to the facilities available to welcome visitors to the cathedral, including accessibility and toilet facilities
