Visits for schools and youth groups

Bring your young people to explore Durham Cathedral, a place of Christian pilgrimage and prayer for nearly a thousand years.

We ask all schools, academies, colleges, nurseries and youth groups to book ahead of their visit using the enquiry links below.

Timings

Guided and part-guided visits typically run 10:00am - 2:15pm, including 30 minutes for lunch time.

Self-led visits are arranged to a schedule that suits your needs within visiting hours. 

Availability

Guided visits are available Monday to Friday.

Self led visits are available within cathedral opening hours by arrangement. 

All group visits need to book ahead of their visit using the enquiry links below.

Pricing

Guided visits are available from £4.50 per young person. 

Self-led visits are £3.50 per young person.

All supervising adults are free of charge.

Organising a learning visit for under-18s: step by step

Step 1: Choose your topic area and the level of support you would like from our expert guides

Book our guides to support your visit at the following rates:

  • 3 one-hour guided sessions at £8.00 per young person. This includes an interactive tour of Durham Cathedral, two hands-on workshops and a keepsake to remember your visit.
  • 2 one-hour guided sessions at £6.50 per young person. This includes an interactive tour of Durham Cathedral, and one hands-on workshop on your chosen topic.
  • 1 one-hour guided session at £4.50 per young person. This is an interactive tour of Durham Cathedral, tailored to your chosen topic.
  • a self-led visit to the Cathedral at £3.50 per young person. This includes resources to support your visit.

Step 2: Enquire

Fill in an enquiry form and we get back to you with our availability.

Step 3: Confirmation

Once a date has been agreed and you have confirmed you wish to go ahead with the visit, we send you a confirmation form.

Step 4: Safeguarding

With your confirmation form, you receive a link to our safeguarding pledge. You need to complete this before your visit.

Step 5: Arrival and Payment

On the day, check in at the Visitor Desk. If you have booked one of our guides, they will greet you. If you have chosen to pay in cash, please pay at the Visitor Desk on arrival. 

After your visit, we send you an invoice, unless you have already paid at the Visitor Desk. Please see FAQs for more information on payment.
