Do you remember your favourite teacher?

On the north side of the Nave, opposite the Neville family tombs, you will find a memorial to a much-loved schoolmaster, the Reverend James Britton.

Interesting facts

  • Born about 1760, Britton graduated from Christchurch College Oxford as Doctor of Divinity. He taught at Durham School, from 1782 becoming Master of the School and Professor of Sacred Theology. He remained at the school for 29 years. He left to become the vicar of St. Botolph’s at Bossall in the Vale of York. He died in 1836 aged 77 and is buried in the church.
  • In 1839 a group of his former pupils came together to commission a memorial to their beloved teacher to be placed in Durham Cathedral.
