LIGHT by Chris Levine

Saturday 29 May to Thursday 30 September

Set foot in the Galilee Chapel to experience LIGHT, an immersive art installation by artist Chris Levine. Bathe in coloured light and the sound of choral music as you follow in the footsteps of medieval pilgrims. LIGHT is open every day, during cathedral opening hours, until September 2021.

This sensory spectacle is symbolic of the medieval tradition of foot washing, which pilgrims of centuries-past would participate in upon arrival at their destination. Commissioned in 2010 by the Genesis Foundation for Holy Trinity Church, the installation has been adapted especially for Durham Cathedral.

LIGHT is accompanied by a soundtrack of sacred choral music in recordings by The Sixteen, conducted by the ensemble’s founder Harry Christophers. It includes Among Angels by Durham-born composer Will Todd and other distinguished contemporary composers.

LIGHT is open to all visitors to the cathedral. Find out more, here.
